Tributes have poured in for an “angel” who was found dead in a flat in East Kilbride. Phoenix Spencer, 21, died in the property on Glen Lee, in the St Leonard’s area of the town, on Monday.
Emergency services had raced to the block of flats shortly after noon, where Phoenix’s body was discovered. A 26-year-old man has since been arrested and charged in connection with her death.
He is due to appear to Hamilton Sheriff Court today, Wednesday, November 20. A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
Phoenix had worked locally in the Strathaven Hotel and Roasted cafe in Strathaven. It is believed she had been working on Friday but a source said she had failed to turn up for a shift on Monday.
Detective Chief Inspector Susie Cairns, Lanarkshire CID, said: “Phoenix’s family are obviously stunned and completely devastated by what has happened and we will continue to support them and those affected during this very distressing time. Officers remain at the scene however there is no wider risk to the public.”
Following the news of Phoenix’s death, social media has been flooded with tributes to the popular young woman. Ciara Dixon said: “I am absolutely speechless, Phe you did not deserve this, how can this world be so cruel! Rip angel. Friendship I will never forget x.”
Another said: “Rip Phoenix Spencer-Horn, may you rest in eternal peace. Gorgeous girl throughout. I will remember and cherish our memories x. She was so loving and caring, she didn’t have a bad bone in her body.”
Anna Neary, a grandparent of one of her friends, commented: “Beautiful Girl! My three granddaughters from Glassford know her and went to the same school in Strathaven. It’s heartbreaking. I can’t stop thinking about her and her family.”
Leah Caitlin added: “The most incredible girl inside and out. It was such an honour to grow up with you. RIP sweet girl.” Others were “completely devastated” and described Phoenix as an “amazing, bubbly girl who always made people smile”.
Locals were left stunned on Monday as a convoy of police cars and ambulances turned up on the quiet residential street just after lunchtime. Officers were seen rushing into a block of flats which was immediately locked down.
One local told of their shock as police swooped on the scene. They said: “It was like something out of a movie, the blue lights were everywhere and it was obvious something very serious was going on.
“This is normally a very quiet area so nobody can quite believe what has happened.” Another resident added: “People are in complete and utter shock.”
