Yellowstone’s fifth season is in full swing, with only four episodes remaining to conclude the Dutton saga after Kevin Costner’s departure as John Dutton. Despite this, the popular Paramount franchise shows no signs of slowing down, with several spin-offs in progress and rumours suggesting the main storyline may continue in some form.
In the fifth season’s 10th episode, Beth Dutton (played by Kelly Reilly) is still grappling with John’s death and devises a plan with her brother Kayce (Luke Grimes) to retaliate against Jamie (Wes Bentley) and Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri).
But will Beth’s story end once she avenges her father’s death? Or does her marriage to rugged cowboy Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) hold more drama?
Reilly recently expressed her interest in exploring another chapter of Beth’s story.
“I loved this season,” she said. “There were some really different territories to explore, so I’m not clinging to her. I’m happy to put her back in her padlocked box”, reports the Mirror.
Although the actress seems content with Beth’s trajectory this season, she would jump at the opportunity to do more if showrunner Taylor Sheridan had the right concept.
Speaking to Town and Country, she said: “I am definitely interested in Beth, and who she is after some things have happened. Who is she in peace?
“As an actor you’re like, ‘Ooh, let me at that’. Wouldn’t it be fun to watch Beth go to therapy?”
Beth, a fiery and independent member of the Dutton family, is known for her reluctance to unpack her emotions. However, the death of her father has deeply affected her, and therapy might be the only way she can cope with both her childhood and recent traumas.
The current season also sees the tension between Beth and Jamie escalating, as John Dutton’s daughter firmly believes that the family’s black sheep is responsible for their father’s death, despite his denial of any involvement in Sarah’s plot.
In the tenth episode, titled The Apocalypse of Change, Beth confronts Jamie in his office, slapping him and demanding he looks at her. When he refuses, she threatens Jamie, warning him that if he does look at her, it will be the last thing he ever sees.
After leaving the office, Beth encounters Sarah outside and grabs her by the throat. Sarah’s laughter is enough confirmation for Beth, who promptly calls Kayce to reveal that Jamie was involved in their father’s death with Sarah’s assistance.
Will Beth and Kayce team up to exact revenge on Jamie? Or can Jamie persuade them that he is merely a pawn in Sarah’s game and reclaim his place on the ranch?
Yellowstone season 5, part 2 continues Sundays on Paramount and the following Monday on Paramount+.
