A local councillor has raised concerns about significant damage to road safety crash barriers on a busy carriageway in Ravenscraig.

Sections of the crash barriers at the New Craig Road in Ravenscraig have been hit by drivers and the damage has weakened the protection provided to pedestrians by the structures if struck again by motor vehicles.

The crash barriers at the side of the road on approach to the A723 roundabout from Ravenscraig and where motorists can turn left on to Merry Street, drive straight through or go right to Carfin have experienced considerable damage.

Councillor Nathan Wilson has contacted the local authority’s roads service to ask for the weakened barriers to either be replaced or repaired.

The Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig elected member said: “The significant damage to the crash barriers sadly suggests that some motorists are not adhering to the set speed limits on New Craig Road and particularly at the roundabouts.

“A section of the crash barriers on approach to the A723 roundabout from Ravenscraig is now almost lying on the ground and this part of the metal structure seems to have been hit with considerable force.

“There is also some damage to the crash barriers at other sections of New Craig Road such as on approach to the residential housing.

“It is important that the council arrange remedial works for the significantly weakened crash barriers nearby the A723 roundabout and look to ensure that strengthened structures are in place to maximize protection against speeding vehicles for people who are using the pavement.”
