The trailer for a new film featuring Jack Black has elicited varied responses, with some fans expressing excitement and others dubbing it a potential ‘new contender for the worst movie ever made’.
Black, renowned for his roles in School of Rock and the Jumanji reboot, is set to appear in a part live-action adaptation of the popular video game Minecraft.
First launched in early access in 2009 as Cave Game, Minecraft has since evolved into a worldwide sensation. The sandbox game, developed by Mojang studios, offers players the freedom to explore and construct virtually anything from basic blocks.
A film based on the game is slated for release next year, and a new trailer provides the most detailed glimpse yet at the envisioned world, though not everyone is impressed.
Tenacious D’s lead singer, Black, will portray Steve, the player character from the game since its full release in 2011. He’ll be joined by Aquaman’s Jason Momoa, who plays one of four misfits struggling with everyday issues until he’s abruptly transported through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a strange, cubic wonderland fuelled by imagination, reports the Mirror.
To return home, they must navigate this world while fending off Piglins and Zombies and embark on a magical journey with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Their adventure will compel all five to be brave and reconnect with their unique creative qualities…the very skills they need to flourish back in the real world.
Audiences had polarising reactions to the latest trailer, showcasing an in-depth peek into the film’s cast and a Minecraft-inspired universe waiting for them.
Some viewers took extreme measures by calling for a halt on the movie’s release, comparing it unfavourably to a prior unsuccessful game adaptation with one commenter remarking: “This feels like what happened with Borderlands all over again.”
There was a tug-of-war of emotions for one fan due to their connection with the original game: “I have a love-hate relationship with this movie, I feel grossed out by the fuzzy creatures but excited because it’s Minecraft and I love Minecraft.”
The anticipation continued with remarks on the main cast: “Jack black doing another cameo as Jack Black.”
Moreover, a social media reaction to the trailer suggested it could be famously bad as someone stated: “I’m so excited we may actually have a new contender for the worst movie ever made.”
A Minecraft Movie is in cinemas April 2025.
