Stirling’s railway station has been named as one of the top 10 most used in Scotland.

The Office for Rail and Road revealed the most and least used railway stations in the country, based on the number of entries and exits between April 2023 and March this year.

Of the top 10 most used stations, Stirling ranked seventh, with 2.4 million entries and exits. Glasgow Central ranked top of the pile, with 25-million. Edinburgh Waverley ranked second with 21.3 million and Glasgow Queen Street was third with 14.5 million.

The top 10 least used stations were made up of Kildonan (240); Scotscalder (242); Altnabreac (250); Beasdale (260); Culrain (300); Lochluichart (374); Locheilside (418); Invershin (440); Duncraig (448); and Achanalt (506).

Across the UK, the Office of Rail and Road confirmed today that London Liverpool Street station retained its title as Great Britain’s most used railway station in 2023-24, while Denton in Greater Manchester was Great Britain’s least used station at 54 entries and exits.

Feras Alshaker, Director, Planning and Performance at the Office of Rail and Road, said: “These statistics provide crucial insights for passengers, the rail industry and its stakeholders and demonstrate clearly how travel patterns are changing across the country.”

In June 2023, Stirling station was unveiled after a £5million revamp after months of work on the site.

The changes included a complete re-design of the public areas outside the station, including a new pedestrianised plaza to allow better access for those walking, wheeling and cycling to the station.

The roundabout on Goosecroft Road was removed, with a new entrance installed to the south car park via the A9 Burghmuir Road. A new ‘state-of-the-art’ controlled entry and exit system with vehicle number plate recognition was also installed in the south car park, with additional blue badge and electric vehicle bays also included as part of the changes.

One of the other key changes was the introduction of a secure ‘CyclePoint’, offering more than 140 bike spaces and increasing the number of spaces available at the station to more than 200.

Customer facilities within the station were also boosted, with the customer lounge and accessible toilet on platform two seeing a comprehensive refurbishment – including the installation of new floors, walls, ceilings, and furniture.

Renovations were carried out in the customer lounge between platforms three and six to ensure that customers at the station can enjoy more comfortable amenities on site.
