BBC has offered Gavin and Stacey fans a sneak peek into what the final episode holds. The last instalment was confirmed earlier this year, with James Corden sharing the thrilling news with fans on social media.
The forthcoming Christmas special is set to welcome back most of the original cast, including Matthew Horne (Gavin Shipman), Joanna Page (Stacey Shipman), Alison Steadman (Pam Shipman ), Larry Lamb (Mick Shipman) and Rob Brydon (Bryn West).
As the finale approaches, BBC has dropped hints about the plot for the new episode. “It’s been five years since we left Nessa down on one knee declaring her love for Smithy and asking him to marry her. And a lot has happened since then,” reads the synopsis for the upcoming episode.
The synopsis further reveals: “In Barry, Bryn’s packing the Picasso in readiness for a trip to Essex; Stacey and Gavin are looking for new ways to spice up their seventeen year marriage and Gwen is behaving most strangely. Nessa’s started a new business venture and Neil the Baby’s about to begin an apprenticeship with his dad.”
“Over in Billericay, Pam is stressing out at the prospect of playing hostess, not helped by a newly retired Mick practising his golf swings in the living room and there have been more ups and downs in Pete and Dawn’s relationship.”
There are also whispers about Sheridan Smith making a comeback. She hasn’t played Rudi Smith on the show since 2009.
The upcoming episode is a direct sequel to the 2019 Christmas special, which attracted over 17 million viewers on its initial broadcast, making it the most-watched TV episode in ten years.
Previously, the episode concluded with a suspenseful twist as Nessa and Smithy’s relationship was left uncertain following the birth of their son ‘Neil the Baby’. Nessa professed her love for Smithy and proposed to him.
Gavin and Stacey first aired on BBC Three from 2007 to 2010, spanning three seasons. It quickly gained cult status and transitioned to BBC One.
Since then, it has been a hit with audiences and has bagged two Bafta TV awards and one National Television Award.
