Cash-strapped Dumbarton are set to receive a huge financial boost of £75,000 due to the success of a fundraiser started by supporters.

The League One side – whose clash away to Alloa this afternoon has been postponed due to bad weather – entered into administration of advisory firm Quantuma earlier this week after a last-ditch attempt to find a potential buyer failed, with the Sons now four points adrift at the bottom of Scotland’s third tier after being handed a 15-point deduction by the SPFL. To make matters worse, Police Scotland have now launched an investigation into the running of the club, over concerns of ‘fraudulent activity’.

But there could be some light at the end of the tunnel for Dumbarton. A GoFundMe page started by fans Cameron Watson and Joanne McBride has raised nearly £75,000 smashing their initial target of £50,000 in just a few days time. £10,000 of that figure has came from the Sons Supporters Trust who have issued a statement confirming their support for the fundraiser. It read: What began as one of the grimmest of weeks is steadily turning into one of the greatest. And it’s not over yet.

“The Board of the Sons Supporters Trust would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone – Dumbarton FC club supporters, the local community and beyond, the Dumbarton diaspora, former players and officials, fans of our fellow Scottish clubs, indeed everyone who has contributed to what has already been a magnificent fundraising response to our club’s cry for help.

“This effort will continue, as the first part of the renewal and revival process of the club requires that we collectively secure funds sufficient to cover the remainder of the current season. In that regard we are delighted to announce that following an online ballot of our Trust membership there has been universal approval for a donation from the Sonstrust to the GoFundMe campaign of ten thousand pounds.

“When a crisis like this develops it demands an immediate and effective response. Whilst it has truly been a collective effort, the Trust Board would like to acknowledge the particular contributions of our Trust Director Cameron Watson and Trust Treasurer Joanne McBride in the set-up and coordination of the GoFundMe platform. A great start, And together we can do this folks. Thank you.”
