MERCER COUNTY, W.Va. -The Mercer County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shooting incident that injured a 14-year-old juvenile.

Capt. J.J. Ruble said the shooting was reported Saturday morning at 9:55 a.m. on Skating Rink Hollow Road near Bluefield and was initially described as a hunting accident.

But after further investigation it was found that two 14-year-olds were in possession of a .22 caliber rifle and mishandled the firearm, causing the rifle to discharge and hit one of the teens in the face.

Ruble said the youth remained stable and conscious during the incident and was transported to WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital by the Bluefield Rescue Squad.

The case is still under investigation with Corp. N.J. Mason the lead investigator with the assistance of Detective-Corporal M.T. Hatfield.
