BLUEFIELD, Va. -Lighting up Jack Asbury Square in Bluefield, Virginia again this year is the Annual Tree Lighting Celebration.

This festive event is a staple within the community during the holiday season, bringing joy to folks of all ages.

From ice skating to snowball throwing, the tree lighting kicked off the Christmas spirit in the community while also offering free food and hot chocolate to help folks stay warm.

“We try to be involved in the community several times a year, serving the community with various activities, including passing out food to our community at several events. We think Christmas is a great time to share the love and the joy with others, and the hot dogs and the hot chocolate,” says Ron Tavor, Minister of Falls Mills Christian Church. Tavor and fellow volunteers passed out hot dogs, chips, drinks, and more during the event.

Although the weather was a bit cold and misty, it didn’t put a damper on the joyful mood. Lee Riffe and James Hampton, volunteers for the event, which has been happening for over 25 years, is all-around great.

“It’s the community coming together and the countdown to light that Christmas tree and watch the kids’ faces when that tree lights and Santa comes in on the fire truck. It’s amazing. It’s our hallmark moment,” says Riffe.

A few of Santa’s helpers also made a surprise flight to drop off goodies to believers before departing back into the sky, most likely to return to the North Pole!
