Coronation Street has confirmed major shake-up for Christmas Day special.

The beloved British soap Coronation Street, which is marking its 64th anniversary this year, has been a cornerstone of festive television. Every year, viewers have been served a platter of explosive dramas during the Christmas season.

Featuring everything from unexpected deaths and life-altering illness revelations to grand spectacles and dramatic comebacks, Weatherfield’s Christmas has seldom been calm. The latest scoop from new head Kate Brook promises that the upcoming yuletide will stay ‘true’ to form.

Chatting with Plymouth Live, Kate revealed that this year’s festive episode is “very fun” and “really lively”, but prepared fans for an onslaught of unexpected revelations: “lots of bombshells are dropped”.

Amidst the mayhem, Gail Platt’s (played by Helen Worth) possible nuptials to Jesse Chadwick (portrayed by John Thomson) forms a backdrop. Yet Kate playfully dodged confirming any details: “Whether she goes through with that or not, I cannot tell anything.”, reports Plymouth Live.

Earlier in the year, Helen Worth announced her departure from the show after five decades, her concluding scenes set to broadcast over the Christmas period. It wouldnt be a Corrie Christmas without chaos, it seems.

Kate further teased: “There are lots of betrayals and lots of secrets are exposed.” Sadly, there’s also an unforeseen alteration in store that might not sit well with viewers.

This year, both the soap and Emmerdale have been offering fans the chance to catch episodes from as early as 7am on ITVX, well before their traditional evening airing on ITV1. However, viewers keen to tune into ITVX at 7am on Christmas Day for the festive episode are in for a letdown.

The Christmas special won’t be following the early morning trend but will instead stick to its prime-time evening slot.

Delving into the details of the Corrie Christmas special, Kate disclosed that “it will feel very kind of classic Corrie with a bit of a twist”. She elaborated: “We are all in need of a bit of escapism at the minute. And we’ve had quite a dark and brilliant, few months on the cobbles. Christmas for us, is all about us trying to tap into the family dynamics of the Platts, what makes people tick.”

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
