David Moyes has emerged as a frontrunner for the vacant Leicester City job.
The Foxes are on the lookout for a new boss after Steve Cooper was sacked yesterday having won just three of his 15 games in charge following his appointment in the summer, replacing Enzo Maresca following his move to Chelsea. With former Manchester United and West Ham boss Moyes joining Graham Potter and Ruud van Nistelrooy as one of the leading contenders with bookies.
Moyes has been out of work since leaving West Ham United in May, having taken charge of more than 250 games across two spells at the London Stadium, before the Hammers decided against extending his contract and appointed former Spain and Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui. The 61-year-old has also been hotly tipped to be Scotland’s next manager, but that looks unlikely to happen any time soon with Steve Clarke under contract until 2026 – and having guided the national side to back-to-back wins in their last two outings.
However Moyes, who guided West Ham to a ninth place finish last season, could be set for a return to management with Leicester, with Betfair currently placing him as second favourite for the role. Behind former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter – who had previously been linked with replacing under-fire Philippe Clement at Rangers.
It would give the Glaswegian a chance to close in further on the record for most games managed in the English Premier League, with currently only Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger ahead in the record books. After leaving Preston North End to replace Walter Smith at Everton in 2002, Moyes took charge of more than 500 games – before replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2013.
Despite being handpicked by the Red Devils icon for the role, Moyes’ time at Old Trafford was brief – as he lasted just 51 games. And he has since gone on to take charge of Sunderland as well as two spells at West Ham. He left the Hammers just three games short of hitting the 700 Premier League matches mark, 110 games short of Ferguson’s total at Manchester United and 118 behind Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.
