COAL CITY, W.Va. – For the final High School football playoff game of the weekend, the No. 3 seed Independence Patriots took on the No. 14 seed James Monroe Mavericks in the Class AA first round Sunday after the game was postponed due to weather Friday.
It was a back-and-forth first half, where the Patriots got an early 7-0 lead off a pick-six until the Mavericks responded to make it 7-7. Sylas Nelson would score his first touchdown of the game to make it 14-7, till James Monroe would get a 45-yard field and pick-six of its own to go into the halftime lockerroom up 17-14.
However, in the second half, it be all Nelson, who would rack up four touchdowns in the second half, accumulating five on the day with 338 rushing yards, to outscore the Mavericks 27-6 in the second half and go on to win 41-23.
Independence will face No. 6 seed Philip Barbour at home, at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
