Two Dumfries and Galloway rugby players starred for Scotland over the weekend.

Corsock’s Alex Craig was a replacement as the national side recorded a fine win over Australia, with Dundrennan’s Stafford McDowall captaining the A team to victory over Chile.

Craig, who plays his club rugby for Scarlets, came off the bench to replace Grant Gilchrist with eight minutes remaining at Scottish Gas Murrayfield on Sunday afternoon.

The 27-year-old, who came through the ranks at Stewartry and Dumfries Saints, helped Scotland record a 27-13 win over Australia to give them the Hopetoun Cup in the final game of the Famous Grouse Autumn Nations Series.

A week earlier, McDowall – who plays for Glasgow Warriors and was also a Stewartry Shark – captained Scotland to victory over Portugal.

On Saturday night, he led Scotland A to a 19-17 win at the Hive Stadium.
