Coronation Street is gearing up for a shocking twist involving Audrey Roberts, and it doesn’t bode well for her daughter Gail.
Sue Nicholls, who has portrayed the soap legend since 1979, has been at the centre of numerous major storylines over the years.
Currently, the show is preparing for the departure of Audrey’s on-screen daughter, Gail Platt, played by Helen Worth. The 73 year old actress announced her plans to leave the long-standing drama in June, describing it as the “perfect time”.
Helen first graced the screen as Gail Platt in 1974, quickly becoming a fan favourite. She wrapped up filming earlier this month, with her exit scheduled to air during the festive season.
However, it seems the Platts won’t be having a peaceful Christmas. In an interview with Plymouth Live and other media outlets, new boss Kate Brooks revealed that the holiday season on the cobbles will be “very fun” and “really lively”, but warned of many “lots of bombshells are dropped”.
The storyline is set against the backdrop of Gail Platt’s potential wedding to Jesse Chadwick, played by John Thomson. However, Brooks teased: “Whether she goes through with that or not, I cannot tell anything.”, reports Plymouth Live.
She further explained: “You’ve got the Platts at the heart of it, you’ve got David and Shona, and David has made massive mistakes. This goes on to have massive consequences and Shona hits that self-destruct behaviour.”
“And [she] makes some really terrible judgement calls but what is important for me about David and Shona is that they can both really mess up but that love that they have is so strong.”
However, it appears David isn’t the only one keeping secrets from his dear mum, Gail. Audrey, Gail’s own mother, will also “betray” her in forthcoming scenes.
“All those secrets come to the forefront on Christmas Day, so you basically have Gail – who’s going to leave the street – in the run-up to Christmas she has found out that some of her nearest and dearest have absolutely betrayed her,” Kate disclosed.
Kate then revealed how Audrey also plays a role in Gail’s betrayal. She stated: “She [Gail] doesn’t know who to believe, even her dear old mum has kind of lied to her and she really struggles with that. And she’s a bit like ‘I don’t know whether I want this, I don’t know whether I want to be with Jesse'” Kate added.
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
