Killian Phillips revealed he was running on empty before a ball had been kicked in anger between St Mirren and Aberdeen.

Saturday’s Premiership clash eventually kicked off at 4pm as an heroic effort saw the SMiSA Stadium pitch cleared of snow.

The players’ pre-match preparations were disrupted which meant Phillips needed to refuel ahead of the late afternoon start.

After wolfing down bananas and Jaffa Cakes, the 22-year-old impressed as the Paisley side beat Aberdeen 2-1 to end their long league unbeaten record.

Toyosi Olusanya and Richard Taylor were on the scoresheet either side of ex-Buddie Jamie McGrath’s goal as Saints made it 10 points from a possible to 12 with a 2-1 victory to cement their top-six spot.

Phillips provided an insight into an unusual afternoon and praised the hardy souls who helped make the game happen.

He said: “Since I’ve been at the club, the volunteers and the work that is done around Paisley for us is unbelievable.

“It’s easy not to come down and sweep the pitch but they are the reason we had a game. From myself, the boys and all the staff, we’d like to thank them. There was extra time to chill out but I was starving by the time the kick-off came around!

“It’s the first time it’s happened to a lot of us where we’re in the dressing room ready to go and the game keeps getting pushed back. I had a couple of bananas and some Jaffa Cakes.

“We all knew the task at hand and were focused when the game started.”

Phillips let off some steam in the dying seconds after keeping possession in the corner and winning a throw-in for his side. He punched the air and yelled to a section of the main stand faithful as Saints closed in on the win.

“The little moments like killing those seconds at the end are a part of the game that help get you the three points,” he explained.

“I was giving a bit to the fans because it was sold out. The stadium was rocking.”

Phillips — who spent the second half of last season on loan at Aberdeen — is loving life in Paisley and enjoying working with Buddies boss Stephen Robinson as he begins to hit top form.

He said: “It was tough last season at Aberdeen. Things didn’t go my way and I had personal stuff going on back home. I’m just delighted to be back playing football and getting my head down every day. I haven’t been homesick at all.

“In fairness to the gaffer, he believes in me, the boys believe in me and they give me a platform to go and express myself. He treats you with respect. He treats you how you would like to be treated.

“He is good at getting bits out of you. He learns you, your background, knows what makes you tick and when to calm you down.

“Give a man respect and he will crawl over the finish line on broken glass. He has been excellent for me and I am filled with belief every time I play for him. It means a lot to be playing football with a smile on my face and enjoying it.”
