Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has served up his personal dining do’s and don’ts, sharing insights on what he avoids when eating out.
In a candid chat with Town and Country, the iconic chef revealed that there’s one dish that he wouldn’t order – and it’s something very popular that many of us will have eaten before.
And his reason for avoiding it might put you off ordering it ever again.
He says the ‘soup of the day’ is often a miss for him, suggesting it could be a trick for restaurants to get rid of leftovers or unsold specials from the day before.
Gordon advised: “Ask what yesterday’s soup du jour was before today’s special. It may be the case that it’s the soup du month.”
His top tip for uncovering a restaurant’s best dishes is to seek guidance from your server. Given their familiarity with the menu’s finer points, they’re in an ideal position to recommend the latest culinary creations or popular picks.
Drawing from his own experiences, he shared: “It depends on the restaurant, but servers tend to taste most of the dishes on the menu and can give you insight into what the chef has added and what the locals have,” thus securing some “great recommendations.”
The acclaimed chef also highlighted the one dish he typically steers clear of at eateries and offered advice on identifying potential “red flags” at dining establishments. He cautioned against places that overhype their fare with claims such as “world’s best,” “famous,” or “best in the country”, reports the Mirror.
He also flagged the danger of an extensive list of specials, hinting that they might not be as fresh or exciting as they’re made out to be.
Gordon pointed out in a chat with the Mail: “Specials are there to disappear throughout the evening. When they list 10 specials, that’s not special.”
