(CNN) – A smaller plate could make a big difference on Thanksgiving, or any other day of the year for that matter.

Roughly 316 million pounds of food are expected to be thrown out this Thanksgiving.

The nonprofit organization ReFed told The Washington Post the amount of turkey, mashed potatoes and other trimmings wasted on the holiday is worth more than $550 million worth of food.

The group said that is enough to feed every food-insecure person in the U.S. five times over.

Food conservation experts said there are ways to try to fight food waste, including using smaller plates for family and friends.

A New Zealand University food science researcher said those smaller plates can prompt people to take less food at one time.

Several studies have shown that using smaller plates can also make sure people don’t take food that they won’t eat and eventually throw away.
