Stephen Mulhern was rushed to hospital after reportedly collapsing in a restaurant. The Deal Or No Deal host, 47, has had a tough few weeks after losing his beloved father.
As reported by the Mirror, it is believed he suffered a bad reaction to some medication after having a few drinks with his meal at Pizza Express. He underwent a procedure earlier in the day for which he was administered an anaesthetic.
Staff at the restaurant are said to have become concerned for the telly favourite’s welfare, so called an ambulance at around 8pm on Wednesday. Stephen was taken to a hospital in Surrey after being assessed by paramedics, where he was then checked over as a precaution. The star is now recovering at home.
A source told the Mirror: “Stephen has had an incredibly tough time over the past few weeks. His beloved father recently passed away which has hit him hard and has been understandably very stressful. In addition he had a procedure which took place yesterday (Wednesday). Following the anaesthetic that was administered, he had a few drinks which made him unwell and he was taken in to hospital as a precaution. He is now back home recovering.”
The Sun reported how Stephen was on the phone to his mum to reassure her that he was okay during the scary incident. The source added: “Stephen is recovering well at home now, and is resting up. He’s so grateful for the care he received, and is mortified that he had such an awful — and public — reaction to the anaesthetic.”
His close pal Holly Willoughby, whom he co-hosts new game show You Bet! with, is said to have continuously supported Stephen – who has had several health problems over the past few years. Stephen broke his silence on the ‘worrying’ illness that forced him off air in 2022 in November last year.
In March of that year the TV host was rushed to hospital with a mystery medical condition and had to spend a few weeks recovering on ‘doctor’s orders.’ Fans first realised something was up when Stephen was absent from a few episodes of Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.
Stephen posted a message to fans after missing three weeks of telly, reassuring them he was okay. Writing on X, formerly known as Twitter, he said: “Hello all, Sorry I’ve been quiet on here recently and thank you for all your lovely messages. I’ve had some time off and been resting up on doctor’s orders.”
He added: “I’m on the mend, I’m happy to say, and looking forward to getting back to work soon. In the meantime…I’ll put my feet up and watch Saturday Night Takeaway tonight with the rest of you lot. Please don’t miss me too much! Lots of love, Stephen. X.”
Since his health scare, Stephen revealed he had put measures in place to make sure he can complete long days of filming. Though he stopped short of saying what was wrong with him, he appeared to hint it was serious and said at the time: “Now we’re all right. But it wasn’t good. It was a bit of a worrying time.”
