Coatbridge and Cumbernauld cops cracked down on drug drivers in a road safety operation this week.

Officers noticed a car at Mahon Court, in Moodiesburn, at around 10.25pm on November 26 parked up with the engine running and multiple people within the vehicle.

On approaching the car they detected a strong smell of cannabis.

All individuals within the car were detained for a search and the 23-year-old driver was allegedly found in possession of a small amount of herbal material. A roadside drug swab was carried out on the driver which is claimed to have tested positive for cannabis.

The driver was arrested and taken to a police office where blood samples were taken. He was released pending lab results.

Then on Cliffvale Road, Chryston, at around 8.10pm on November 27 officers clocked a car parked up with the engine running.

A 21-year-old man was in drivers seat with a 20-year-old male passenger. Officers could smell a strong smell of cannabis from the car and detained both males for a search.

The driver was found to be in possession of a clear bag containing white powder. A roadside drug swab was carried out on the driver which tested positive for cocaine.

He was arrested and taken to a police office where blood samples were taken and was later released pending lab results. The passenger was found to be in possession of herbal cannabis and was issued a recorded police warning.

At Drumpellier Country Park, Coatbridge, on November 27 at around 11.30pm officers were carrying out routine patrols when they observed a car parked with the engine running. They detected a strong smell of cannabis from within the car.

The 18-year-old driver was detained for a search and was found to be in possession of a jar containing herbal material. A roadside drug swab was carried out and tested positive for cocaine and cannabis.

He was taken to a police office where blood samples were taken and he was released pending lab results.

Meanwhile, as part of the road safety initiative, officers observed a 26-year-old woman who they knew to be a disqualified driver drive past them, park, then exit a car at The Oval, Glenboig at around 2.50pm on November 26.

They approached her and checks confirmed she was disqualified from driving and was driving without a valid insurance policy.

She was arrested and held custody to appear at court the following day.
