PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. (WEEK/Gray News) – Officials in Illinois are taking public comments regarding plans to rebuild a section of Route 29.
The Illinois Department of Transportation said the rebuilding plans would require the removal of eight homes in the area and relocate a Peoria Park District landmark.
Transportation officials said proposals to reconstruct Route 29 cover the area just north of the McClugage Bridge (U.S. 150) in Peoria Heights to north of Gardner Lane in Peoria.
IDOT staffers are planning to share aerial photographs, reports, and other project exhibits showing the proposed relocation of the Grand View Drive Pavillion and the impacts on Grand View Drive Park and Bielfeldt Park.
The improvements to the 2.6-mile stretch of Route 29 would add a bi-directional turn lane and space to accommodate pedestrians and bicycle riders.
Officials said the team would convert about one acre of park district property to highway use and relocate the Grand View Drive Pavillion about 40 to 60 feet from its current site.
The road improvements would require the state to acquire right-of-way and displace the homes in question.
The open house public hearing is scheduled for Dec. 4 from 4-6 p.m. local time at the Peoria Heights Grade School gymnasium.
IDOT said its staffers will provide information and answer questions during the formal presentation.
