VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (Gray News) – Authorities recovered the body of a 7-year-old boy with autism from a pond in Florida after he ran off from his home earlier this week.

According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, Charlie was reported missing after he ran off from home around 8 p.m. Sunday.

He was non-verbal and was known to be attracted to Christmas lights, bodies of water and to climb up trees.

Deputies and several other agencies worked together to search for the child throughout the night on the land and from the air.

The sheriff’s office posted an update Monday on Facebook around 9 p.m. that Charlie had drowned.

“This is the tragic outcome we all worked so hard hoping would not come to pass,” the sheriff’s office said in the post.
