Outlander star Sam Heughan once made a desperate attempt to become a Canadian, the actor has revealed.
The Scottish heartthrob explained that he made the citizenship bid so that he could become a Mountie, a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
He admitted that he begun to dream of moving abroad in his mid-20s after becoming obsessed with the Canadian TV show ‘Due South’.
Despite claiming to be fixated with the comedy crime series, Sam called the show by the completely wrong name as he became flustered by his co-stars’ disbelief.
He said: “I wanted to be a mountie. I always loved the show True North and wanted obviously to wear the outfit,” referring to the force’s striking red blazers and wide-brimmed hats.
The actor made the embarrassing admission during a hilarious chat with his Outlander co-stars Caitríona Balfe and Sophie Skelton, who play Claire and Brianna respectively.
Doubtful of Sam’s ridiculous Canadian ambitions, Caitríona asked: “Did you actually go through with filling out the forms or was this just a thought you had in your head one day?”
Sam responded that he took an unconventional approach to the task, saying: “I walked into the embassy and demanded to become a Canadian citizen.”
Sam’s Mountie mania was not the only bizarre revelation that the actors made while filming for ELLE’s ‘Where Is The Lie?’ series.
The celebrities were bemused to learn that Sam also has a pet squirrel named Chippy, while Caitríona stunned her co-stars by outlining how she had been to space.
Elaborating on her extra-terrestrial adventures, Caitríona said: “some Outlander fans put a picture of me and maybe somebody else in this room, and they sent us to space”
Hilariously, her co-star Sam was not aware that his image had also been blasted out of this world. As Catriona told the story, he gasped: “Who, me?!”, before turning to Sophie and asking: “or you – are you in space?”
The Outlander stars turned the spotlight on each other to promote the second instalment of the hit show’s seventh season, which returned to our screens on the 22nd of November.
Fans were forced to wait for new episodes since August 2023, making the comeback more hotly anticipated than ever. After the previous series ended with Jamie, Claire and Ian making a long-awaited return to Scotland, new episodes will follow the couple’s attempts to rebuild their life while their marriage is tested “like never before”.
