An impressively large number of young musicians were involved in the Golden Anniversary celebrations of Biggar Accordion & Fiddle Club held recently in different locations in the town.
A youth showcase, held in the Gillespie Centre, featured 18 young musicians performing a wide variety of music, including nine-year-old accordionist Sam Gray from Lanark.
Several local secondary school pupils took part in this event with Calum Gardiner from Biggar, Erin Purdon from Law and Grace Kane from Kaimend entertaining the attentive and resposive audience.
Young Broughton accordionist Fin Hope and his band provided the music for a well-supported family ceilidh held in the Municipal Hall.
Fin was joined at this event by one of Shetland’s finest young accordionists Callum Nicolson, and his Dance Band.
Callum’s band were also guest artistes at the club’s 50th anniversary celebrations held at Biggar Bowling Club.
Local young musicians Alistair Adamson, Chloe Johnstone, Jake Johnstone, Jenna Johnstone, Ruaridh Johnstone and James Milner were amongst the many supporting players performing at this special meeting.
The musicians and listeners enjoyed a slice of the club’s anniversary cake, baked and decorated by Hannah Gold – wife of present club chairman Jim Gold, and cut by Iain Anderson and Sheena Dickson – son and daughter of former club chairman John Anderson.
Although the club welcomes players and listeners of all ages, it was particularly pleasing to see so many young people being involved at the club’s anniversary events.
Next month, on Sunday, December 8, the club welcomes Dumfries singer William Williamson as their guest for a Christmas Club Afternoon in Biggar Bowling Club at 2pm.
