A personal trainer has been given the green light to expand his offering and help children in the Kincaidston area of Ayr to stay fit and healthy.

Jamie Sanderson, from Jump Start Personal Training, previously said his expansion plan was down to a “growing demand” for children’s fitness and wellbeing in the local area.

And he wanted to meet that demand head on.

Mr Sanderson submitted a planning application to South Ayrshire Council, seeking permission for a change of use at a former carpet showroom in Weir Road, so that it could make way for his new business enterprise.

Now the plans have been given the thumbs-up by council planners.

In a supporting statement, Mr Sanderson said: “We feel this would be a great opportunity for us as a business to allow us to grow and have a bigger space for us to store and keep our equipment. The proposed changes are limited to modernisation of the interior of the building and do not involve any structural alterations.”

At present, Mr Sanderson operates a small personal training studio within 100 yards of the building earmarked for the change of use.

He said: “This transition will not have any major noise disturbances to the surrounding area as we will be putting all effort into minimising it with top end equipment.

“We are committed to supporting the wider community, promoting health and wellbeing and currently the community benefits through our support to Kincaidston Community Centre.

“We facilitate weekly sessions within the area for young people which supports emotional wellbeing, inclusion, reduces isolation and feeds into the strategy being delivered by the community team.”

He added: “Having a larger base/studio will support this on an ongoing basis by providing us a much larger storage space for our equipment to make sure the kids within the community will be getting as much out their sessions at Kincaidston as possible with more equipment we can store.”

The proposed hours of operation for the new gym would be 7am (first session) to 8pm (last session).

In approving the plan council papers said: “The proposed development represents the reuse of a vacant Class 5 industrial unit to form a gym. It is noted that the unit has been vacant for a number of years as the owner has struggled to lease or sell the unit for industrial purposes.

“Due to the relative small scale operating of the proposed development, the size of the unit, and the fact it has been vacant for a number of years, it is considered that the proposed use shall revitalise a redundant unit by introducing a facility which would be to the benefit of the wider economy.”
