WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree will be lit Tuesday, marking the start of the holiday season in Washington D.C.
This year’s “People’s Tree” is an 80-foot Sitka Spruce. It made the trip all the way from Alaska to take center stage on the National Mall for the holidays.
The tree took a month-and-a-half to get to D.C. from the Tongass National Forrest. It is the second time in the last 10 years that Alaska is sprucing up the Capitol. The first time was in 2015 when the Chugach supplied a Lutz Spruce.
The tradition itself of the Capitol Christmas Tree dates all the way back to 1964. And once it is lit, you can come see the tree every day through New Year’s Day.
After that, the National Forest Service said the tree will be milled and sent back to the indigenous tribes of Alaska.
