Parts of Scotland are bracing for a big freeze overnight after the Met Office issued a weather warning over icy underfoot conditions set to grip the region.
The yellow weather warning is in place from 9pm tonight (Tuesday) until 10am on Wednesday and could see thick sheets of ice form on untreated surfaces, potentially causing some transport disruption and increasing the chance of accidents.
The warning is in place across Central, Tayside & Fife – including Stirling, Clackmannanshire, Falkirk, Perth and Kinross, Fife, Dundee and Angus.
The warning also extends to West Dunbartonshire, East Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, Glasgow, East Renfrewshire, Argyll and Bute, East Ayrshire, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, Highland, Dumfries and Galloway, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scottish Borders and West Lothian.
A Met Office forecaster said: “A band of rain and snow will move east across Scotland this afternoon and evening – which could lead to some lying snow on higher transport routes.
“Once this clears temperatures will quickly fall during Tuesday evening and ice is likely to form readily on untreated surface during the evening and overnight into Wednesday morning.”
A further yellow warning for strong winds has also been issued for Wednesday.
Forecasters say that strong winds may cause disruption to travel between 4pm and 9am on Thursday and the warning covers Argyll and Bute, Orkney, Shetland, Na h-Eileanan Siar and Highland.
