INSTITUE, W.Va. – After taking down River View and Wirt County Monday in the Class A quarterfinals and semis, the No. 2 seed Greenbrier West Lady Cavalier matched up with the No. 1 seed East Hardy Cougars.

After getting a lead in the first set, 15-13, East Hardy would go on a 12-2 run to take the first set 25-17. However, Greenbrier West would battle back in a tight second set after trailing to win 25-23. In the third, the Lady Cavaliers would be the ones to lead 21-16 at a point, until the Cougars came back to tie it 23-23. Greenbrier West would take the final two points to win 25-23.

In the fourth set, it was very tight, with both teams not being able to gain much separation. It was tight enough that the set would go past 25 points, but in the end, Paige Dean got the game-winning kill to win set four 27-25 and win the state championship 3-1.

It is the first state championship in volleyball history and the first-ever state championship in girls athletics at Greenbrier West high school.
