The Scottish Government has announced that it will increase funding for free school meals and breakfast clubs.

Finance Secretary Shona Robison said in her Budget on Wednesday that her government would work with local authority body Cosla on free school meals for poorer kids.

Robison also announced she would fund a new scheme called Bright Start Breakfasts which would go towards starting more clubs.

The Government is already providing free school meals for primary years one to five and is in the process of delivering it for low income children in the final two years of primary school.

Robison said the aim of the breakfast clubs was to “make things that little bit easier for working mums and dads, while also giving more of our kids better start to their day.”

She said: “We will also work with Cosla to expand free school meals to primary 6 and 7 children from low-income families.”

She continued: “I can announce today we will fund a new initiative that will deliver more breakfast clubs in primary schools across Scotland.

“To be called ‘Bright Start Breakfasts’ this will make things that little bit easier for working mums and dads, while also giving more of our kids better start to their day.”
