BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -Recognized by Southern Living Magazine, Bluefield has been grouped as a sweet destination overflowing with holiday cheer and ranked 18th among all cities and towns in the south.

Bluefield was officially designated as West Virginia’s Christmas City more than two years ago and was already well known for its holiday of lights with more than one and a half million lights. Newer attractions include an ice-skating rink, Mistletoe Market, appearances from the Grinch and Santa plus more.

“Considering all the work that went into it, I mean, it’s well deserved. Our public works department put their heart and soul into it, and they do that every year. But it was better this year because of the hurricane. If you had seen the park prior, you would not believe that this could even happen,” said Felicia Holcomb, Executive Assistant for the Bluefield West Virginia City Manager.

Each year, Visit Mercer County sends promotional boxes to publishers featuring Mercer County products including recipes and gifts and they pitch ideas for writers.

The Executive Director for Visit Mercer County says this is an amazing recognition and shows off the wonderful hard work that is put into Mercer County.

“To be in some type of national recognition for a publication like Southern Living, which really focuses on, southern hospitality, and travel, to be listed in one of their lists it’s super exciting for us,” said Jamie Null, Executive Director for Visit Mercer County. Thousands of people come from different parts of the country to see the holiday of lights and although the city may be small, Bluefield West Virginia absolutely has the Christmas spirit.

“This is extremely important. I mean, you know, they say there’s no place like home for the holidays. We are so fortunate to have it in our backyard,” said Holcomb.

Future plans for the Christmas City are to continue building and growing with the Christmas spirit.
