WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President Joe Biden took part in his final National Christmas Tree lighting in Washington on Thursday night.

The president flipped on the switch for the tree on the Ellipse, the park just south of the White House.

“This 30-foot red spruce represents the spirit embodied in this year’s white House holiday theme, which Jill unveiled earlier this week,” said the president. “The theme is the season of peace and light.”

The tree lighting ceremony is a 102-year old tradition.

The National Chrrimas Tree hails from a different state each year. This year’s tree comes from the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests in southwest Virginia.

“We take a lot of pride. It’s not the first time the national tree has come from Virginia, but we’re anxious to celebrate that,” said Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA).

The tree is open to visitors from the seventh until New Year’s Day.
