Airdrie goal hero Lewis McGregor hopes a narrow 1-0 Scottish Cup win at Dundee North End is the turning point in their season.

The midfielder struck six minutes into the third-round clash at North End Park on Sunday, collecting a Ben Wilson pass before smashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Airdrie carved their Midlands League hosts open on several other occasions, but were unable to add to their tally.

But it’s a first win in any competition for Rhys McCabe’s men since dumping Queen of the South 3-0 in the SPFL Trust Trophy third round on September 7, so provided much-needed relief.

McGregor, 20, who has five for the season so far, said: “That win could be massive for us, it could be the turning point in the season.

“It has been a tough season and it has been frustrating. I just think the end product has been missing.

“I don’t think we’ve been playing badly, or been out of most of the games, but it’s just that final bit of product.

“I think you saw that here, where we should be burying the ball, but we’re just not.

“I’m pleased with the goal, but I think we had chances where we should probably have put the game to bed.

“That allowed them to grow into it a bit more. We need to kill the game off by scoring the chances that we missed.

“We were lacking that final bit of quality, but it’s definitely coming.

“I think the more we work on that, the better we will get.

“Hopefully that can kick start us in the league. I think we definitely needed a result, so just getting that is something we can build on.

“It’s a potential banana skin, but we’re through and hopefully we can get a big draw in the next round.”

McGregor last scored in that 3-0 win at Palmerston Park back in September, but hopes it’s the first of a run for him.

He said: “I jumped in, kept the ball and whipped it into the top bin, so it was ideal.

“Now I’ve got another goal I’m hoping to kick on and get a few more this season.

“I’ve definitely got my own targets – but I’m not going to share them!”

The Diamonds continue their Championship campaign against Queen’s Park at Hampden on Saturday and McGregor hopes they can continue their form.

He said: “It’s good going away to Hampden, and hopefully we can get the result.

“It’s a nice big pitch and we can go and play our own game. It’s perfect for me, opening the legs up.”

Airdrie’s postponed match at home to Livingston on November 23 has been rearranged for Tuesday, December 17, at 7.45pm.
