WOODBURY, Minn. (Gray News) – A teenager died days after he fell under the water and ice at a lake in Minnesota.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the boy as 16-year-old Yahye Ali Abdi, of Woodbury.
According to Woodbury police and EMS, public safety personnel responded to Markgrafs Lake on Dec. 2 after a 911 call was made to report a child had fallen through the ice.
Officials were able to rescue one person from the lake and transport that individual to an area hospital, but Woodbury safety officials said a second person, later identified by the medical examiner’s office Abdi, fell through the water and ice before responders arrived.
Divers eventually pulled Abdi from the lake and took him to the hospital.
The teen was pronounced dead at the University of Minnesota Fairview East Bank Hospital on the morning of Dec. 5, according to Hennepin County Medical Examiner Dr. Andrew Baker.
The cause of death was declared a freshwater drowning.
In a GoFundMe that was created to help with funeral expenses, Abdi’s cousin said the teen “was a remarkable soul, beloved by his peers and elders for his warmth, intelligence, and compassion.”
Woodbury police and emergency services responded to two ice rescues during the week. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said people should stay off ice until it as at least 4 inches thick in all areas of the body of water.
