Coronation Street‘s Julie Goulding has shared her reaction to learning that her character, Shona Platt, is unfaithful. The actress, who has been a fixture on the ITV soap since 2016, has been involved in numerous major storylines over the years.
From suffering a brain injury to narrowly escaping being killed by her own son, Shona’s stint in Weatherfield has been anything but dull. This week, it was revealed that she had cheated on her husband, David Platt (played by Jack P. Shepherd).
Viewers will remember that for the past month, David has been manipulating and lying to Shona in an attempt to prevent her from seeing her son Clayton (portrayed by Callum Harrison). Clayton, who murdered David’s previous wife Kylie (Paula Lane) in 2016, reached out to Shona from prison this year.
David intercepted the communication, continuing his deceit by disposing of letters and deleting emails from the prison. However, in ‘true’ soap opera style, Shona discovered the truth this week and was livid, reports Plymouth Live.
A heated argument between the married couple followed, but Shona was arrested earlier in the day for assaulting a prison governor. After being interviewed by Kit, Shona was released and instead of returning home, she hit the town.
In Friday’s episode (December 6), it was evident that Shona was concealing something significant. In a shocking turn of events at the end of the episode, it was revealed that Shona had spent the night with Kit.
Julia Goulding, who plays Shona on the show, has opened up about her initial reaction to discovering her character would be unfaithful. Speaking with Plymouth Live and other media outlets, she shared: “It was Jack [P. Shepherd] who told me about it.”
“He texted me saying ‘you cheat on me! ‘” Julia recounted. She then described her surprise, saying: “I was like ‘Oh no, who with?!’ and he [Jack] went ‘I’ll give you a clue, he’s massive’.” Initially joking, Julia admitted she thought George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) was the mystery man. She continued: “And then he said it was you [Kit], and I was like ‘Oh right okay. That’s not too bad! ‘”.
Furthermore, the revelation of Shona’s affair with Kit left many fans astonished, and Julia herself was no exception. She expressed her disbelief: “I never expected Shona to cheat on David. Eight years, eight years they’ve been together! And she’s always been faithful, she’s literally never looked at another man,” but she added.
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
