Pupils and staff at Newfield Primary School in Stonehouse are celebrating their 10th Green Flag Award, the top award in international environmental Eco-Schools programme, by charity Keep Scotland Beautiful.
As part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of the international Eco-Schools and Young Reporters for the Environment programmes, Keep Scotland Beautiful has hosted an online assembly, organised live lessons, and set celebration challenges.
Newfield Primary and Nursery School was visited by Keep Scotland Beautiful Chief Executive Barry Fisher and Education and Learning Officer Nicola Davidson, who presented the school’s Eco-Committee with a certificate to mark their 10th flag.
Barry Fisher, CEO of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “This year we celebrate 30 years of schools making an environmental difference through Eco-Schools.
“It’s great that we were able to visit Newfield Primary to present a certificate of achievement and to hear from the children, young people and educators about their inspiring action and commitment to improving our environment.
“For the past 30 years we have loved hearing about the remarkable achievements of our young people and the development of learning for sustainability across the world, and we look forward to continuing to provide support through our Climate Action Schools framework.”
The school’s headteacher Laura Horn added: “Keep Scotland Beautiful came to see all the work we have been doing and finding out about school-based projects that have had an impact on our Outdoor Learning and Sustainability work.
“Ever since our first flag in 2003 we have ensured eco work is at the heart of our curriculum.
“A huge thanks to all the pupils who have been part of all of our eco committees throughout the 30 years alongside current and former staff who have all contributed to this.”
