An Antiques Roadshow expert refused to assess a historical item that a guest had “found in his garage”.
The popular BBC programme, hosted by Fiona Bruce, returned for another episode on Sunday December 8, this time visiting Beaumaris Castle in Anglesey, North Wales.
As usual, members of the public were eager to have their treasures evaluated by experts. However, things took an uncomfortable turn when specialist Hilary Kay refused to value one particular item, the Express reports.
During the episode, a guest presented a brass rowlock mounted on a board, inscribed with ‘Titanic Lifeboat no. 3’, believed to be a fragment from the infamous ship’s lifeboat.
The guest explained to Hilary that he discovered the item in the corner of a garage after purchasing a new house. As Hilary provided information about Titanic Lifeboat no. 3, she mentioned that although it could accommodate 65 people, only around 36 to 38 were believed to have been onboard.
After the lifeboats were saved, they were transported to Pier Number 59 in New York. Hilary added: “And then all the name boards that said Titanic were removed, and those life boards sat there for another six months before being dispersed.”

Unfortunately, the guest was in for some disappointing news as Hilary proceeded to give him a serious warning.
She expressed: “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if I could say categorically that this is from life sort number three on the Titanic? And if it was, we could be talking about in excess of £50,00 for value.”
“But you know, although there’s some probably fairy dust sprinkled over it, we can’t say for sure. So I’m afraid, we’ve got to leave it out there as a mystery as to where it ultimately came from. ”
However, the guest didn’t appear to be too bothered as he replied: “Cheers, thanks so much.”
