Motorists on the A76 are being warned to expect delays as a 52-mile overnight diversion is put in place.
Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, are installing scour monitoring sensors on the embankments of the Crawick Water at Whitehill Bridge, north of Sanquhar, overnight on Thursday and Friday, December 12 and 13.
As part of the works, the A76 will be closed at Sanquhar from 8pm on Thursday to 6am on Friday with a 52-mile diversion running between Cumnock and Thornhill.
Southbound traffic will be diverted from the Dettingen Roundabout onto the A70, the B7078 at Douglas and the A702 at Abington Services before re-joining the A76 at Holestane Road, Thornhill.
Northbound traffic will follow the same diversion in the opposite direction.
A spokesperson for Amey said: “Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is undertaking the essential installation of scour monitoring sensors into the river embankments on the A76 at Whitehill Bridge, north of Sanquhar, from 8pm on Thursday, December 12, until 6am on Friday, December 13.
“This work will require an overnight closure in this location and traffic will be diverted.
“Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works.
“Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.
“This scheme will allow remote scour monitoring and will improve its efficiency at this location.”
