Cumnock’s MSP has expressed ‘deep disappointment’ at the levels of vandalism at the town’s bus station.
Ayrshire Live broke the news on Wednesday, December 11, that the problem has become so bad that it is “no longer viable” to continually replace the smashed glass panels.
Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley MSP Elena Whitham understood the “frustration and concern” of her constituents but insisted the situation was “complex”.
Cumnock bus station was refurbished in 2020 at a cost of £800,000 but has remained a constant target for vandals in the area ever since.
Police Scotland also exclusively confirmed to Ayrshire Live that a number of youths – aged between 13 and 17 – have been reported to relevant authorities in relation to vandalism at the bus station.
Commenting, Ms Whitham said: “I am deeply disappointed to learn that Cumnock Bus Station has once again been vandalised. I fully understand the frustration and concern among residents.
“I wrote to the Ayrshire Roads Alliance earlier this year to express my concerns and ask to be kept up-to-date with their plans to address this ongoing issue. The situation is complex and I do sympathise with the difficulty of justifying public money being spent on continually replacing the glass panels.
“I know that East Ayrshire Council and different youth organisations in the area are making great progress in delivering diversionary work. This will be essential in combating anti-social behaviour issues.
“I understand that officials have consulted with Police Scotland to discuss this persistent anti-social behaviour. While an alternative is sought, I urge you to report any incidents you witness by calling 101.”
