An Ayrshire MSP has welcomed the success of the CashBack for Communities programme which provides young people with positive alternatives to crime and anti-social behaviour.
More than 15,000 young people were supported by the programme in 2023-24 with £5.5 million invested across Scotland.
Ayr MSP Siobhian Brown, Minister for Victims and Community Safety, hailed the programme as a “shining example” of the support available to young people.
Funded through assets seized from criminals, CashBack for Communities allocates funds to 29 partner organisations, helping to provide young people with positive alternatives to crime and anti-social behaviour.
CashBack for Communities works with young people at the highest risk of offending or involvement in anti-social behaviour, helping them make informed, positive choices for their future.
Since April 2023, the programme has helped 15,368 young people who have contributed 64,240 volunteering hours.
The programme has also seen 7,440 young people reporting positive changes in their behaviour, 4,318 reducing their anti-social or criminal behaviour, 6,292 feeling less likely to engage in anti-social or criminal activities, 4,954 earning an accreditation as part of their personal development and 8,348 experiencing improved wellbeing.
Commenting, Ms Brown said: “We know that early intervention is key to breaking the cycle of crime and providing young people with the opportunities they deserve.
“The CashBack for Communities programme is a shining example of how we can help young people in Ayr, Prestwick and Troon and indeed across Scotland, build better futures through the support of trusted adults and diversionary activities.
“The CashBack for Communities programme provides safe spaces, mentoring, and a range of activities designed to support young people in their development.
“Over the next three years, the Scottish Government will invest a further £20million into this initiative, supporting even more young people across Scotland.
“Since its launch in 2008, CashBack for Communities has invested £130 million, reaching approximately 1.3million young people in all 32 local authorities. This is a vital programme that helps us create safer communities and ensure that every young person can thrive.”
