ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Social media was flooded Friday with pictures and reports of what many believe to be drone sightings in southwest Virginia.
WDBJ7 received reports and messages from people saying they saw them Roanoke, Pulaski, Radford, Salem, Vinton, Floyd, Danville and Fincastle.
It remains unclear who’s operating the devices, where they’re coming from, or if they are actually drones at all.
Candace Poling snapped pictures from her property about three miles outside Fincastle. Others shared videos on the social media site Reddit showing them flying over Blacksburg.
Several people posted on social media saying they saw up to eight of the objects flying over neighborhoods in Roanoke.
Local law enforcement agencies told WDBJ7 they haven’t taken any formal reports related to the sightings.
Drone sightings have also been reported over New York City, Denver, and in Pennsylvania.
It comes as authorities look into sightings of mysterious drones hovering over New Jersey.
Federal authorities have said they don’t believe the drones have a “foreign nexus” or pose any threat, CBS News reported. However, New York and New Jersey lawmakers have expressed concerns, specifically about the drones flying close to military sites.
