A BMW owner was horrified when his car burst into flames ‘”without any warning”.
Chris Jones from Cumbernauld says he is “counting his blessings” that no one was injured in the “terrifying” incident on December 1.
The 41-year-old was having lunch with his parents when he received an alarming message from his neighbour showing his car engulfed in flames.
When Chris arrived home at Spruce Road, the Scottish Fire Service had quickly extinguished the flames and secured the area. He initially wondered if the incident had been wilful, but told the Record that police and the fire service were able to rule out foul play within hours.
He also told The Record that BMW is now investigating the incident, and that he has reached out to LeasePlan through whom he purchased that car.
“Witnesses told me that it started with sparks underneath the car and then, within a few minutes, there was a fireball. It all happened very quickly,” the nutritionist said.
“Police told me straight away that there have been similar problems with BMW cars in recent years.
“It’s scary and unbelievably dangerous. To think what could have happened if me or my family were in there at the time, or if I’d switched on the ignition—it doesn’t bear thinking about.
“There’s barely 3,000 miles on the clock, and there were no signs whatsoever that anything was wrong.”
BMW, LeasePlan, Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for comment.
