Fans have said they ‘couldn’t be happier’ after it was announced that the ‘best sitcom ever’ will return with new episodes on Disney+.

The news was confirmed with an announcement on social media by child actor turned race car driver Frankie Muniz, who shared he would officially be returning for a new instalment of beloved series Malcolm in the Middle. The new limited series will be coming exclusively to the streaming platform.

Frankie posted on Instagram: “OH MY GOSH! I’m so excited to announce that after 18 years, Malcolm in the Middle is returning with new episodes on Disney Plus! Get ready, we can’t wait for everyone to see what Malcolm and his family have been up to!” Jane Kaczmarek and Bryan Cranston, who played Malcolm’s parents are also signed on to return and appeared in the video. Kaczmarek said: “What a delight that I get to yell at that kid again!”

Cranston notably went on to star in Breaking Bad following the finale of the sitcom nearly two decades ago. However, it’s not yet known if more original stars who played brothers Francis, Reece and Dewey will also make a return. Fans are hoping they will as they have shared their excitement at the news.

According to Variety, the premise will be as follows: “Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.”

Fans were quick to respond to the news with one simply saying: “Finally! Couldn’t be happier with this return!” Another added: “Wow great to hear! Loved the show growing up! Hope all the great characters like Stevie and Craig show up! Also curious who they’ll cast as grow up Jamie. Lois is prob the best TV mom of all time.”

One fan shared their demand for the significantly shortened series: “If it’s going to be 4 episodes, each episode needs to be at least an hour long.” The original seven series of the show is available to catch up via streaming on Disney+, making it easy for viewers to remind themselves of events before its return. It remains a popular rewatch for fans with many saying it reminds them of their childhood.

Sharing their thoughts online, one fan said: “It’s probably one of the best sitcoms ever created, no laugh tracks, no cheesy jokes or anything. Just raw comedy at it’s best. I HIGHLY recommend it”

Another also rated it highly among their top comedy shows of all time as they posted: “One of the best TV series I’ve ever watched and stands after Friends. The skilled portrayal of the character Francis was absolutely amazing.” A third believed that the original series is “one of the most criminally underrated shows in television history.”
