Six people who were injured when a double-decker crashed into a railway bridge in Glasgow have been discharged from hospital, police have confirmed.

One passenger still remains in a ‘critical condition’ in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

The First Bus vehicle on the 4A route that had 11 passengers on board when the collision took place on Cook Street at 5.55pm on Saturday.

Pictures of the crash showed significant damage to the bus with the front of the roof ripped off. It is understood the bus was travelling down an incorrect road.

Emergency services attended and one man, aged 60, was seriously injured.

One woman, aged 52, and five men, aged 30, 32, 33, 33 and 41 were taken by ambulance to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment to minor injuries.

They have since been discharged. Four others were checked at the scene and have no reported injuries.

Police have confirmed that the driver was not injured.

Spike Turner was sitting near the front of the bus when it struck the bridge.

The 26-year-old sound engineer told the Record: “We drove straight into the bridge. It was quite shocking.

“I was third from the front. The whole front of the bus just collapsed.

“Parts of the bus exterior swung down and struck people in front of me.

“I felt my face and looked around me to see if everyone was okay.

“The lady in front of me was concussed. The man in the front seat was in a bad way. He was covered in blood and had a huge gash to his head.”

Rail lines were suspended due to the collision with the bridge which is on the line between Glasgow Central and Cardonald, but reopened later on in the evening.

All roads reopened around 12.30am on Sunday. Enquiries remain ongoing.

A First Bus spokesman said on Saturday night: “We’re aware of numerous injuries, with one person being taken to hospital in an ambulance.

“We have launched an immediate investigation and are also assisting Police Scotland with their inquiries.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident.”
