Eddie Warwick has hailed his shooting Stars after his side knocked Abbey Vale out of the Tweedie Cup.

Two crackers from Dale Milligan and a tremendous volley from Connor Potts, as well as an effort from Cammy Bryson, saw Dalbeattie Star win 4-1 at Abbey Vale on Saturday.

And Warwick said: “We score a lot of good goals – the one we scored in the League Cup final was outstanding.

“It was tight, you need a wee bit of individual magic and individual technical ability to open the door. We did it twice in the first half and Dale did it again after half-time.

“We have players who can do that – Hunter, Rogerson, Milligan, Potts, Carmichael and Shaw, we’ve got loads that can open doors with a bit of magnificence.

“As soon as Connor connected I knew it was going in because that’s what he does – I’ve not seen him score from within 10 yards yet!

“He’s quickly putting together a portfolio of goal of the seasons just himself, it was a ridiculous strike.”

Milligan had put Star in front in fine style with a 25-yard effort, but Vale drew level through Robbie Simpson as half-time approached.

However, there was still time for Star to re-take the lead before the break thanks to Potts’ stunning strike.

Milligan extended the advantage after an hour outstanding effort with Cammy Bryson wrapping things up late on as Star put their cup final defeat to Lochar Thistle behind them.

Warwick said: “It was a good reaction to the week before. We usually have that, we try to ensure we don’t suffer too many disappointments in a row.

“It was cagey until we opened the scoring and I think Abbey Vale probably started the better team. They were maybe trying to jump on top of our disappointment from the week before.

“It required a very good save from Jake Gemmell and that gave us the platform to go on. We had two or three chances before Dale scored.

“We could have maybe added to that but they’ve scored from a header. We had had a lot of possession but probably fair.

“If it had gone in 1-1 they’d have had their tails up and it’s vitally important scoring goals at dangerous times.

“The goals were good and the football was good. It was probably an edgy game but the second half I thought we fully deserved it.”

This weekend, Star head along the A75 to face Stranraer in their final game of 2024, with Warwick looking for the South of Scotland League champs to finish the year on a high.

However, he knows it will be difficult as their opponents won 4-2 when the sides met back in October.

He said: “We were four down when we played them the last time. Hopefully we can have them all on Saturday and it’ll be a cracking game.

“Stranraer have been very good this year, they fully deserved to beat us at Dalbeattie, we were miles off it. They outplayed and outworked us.

“We will need to be at our very best to get the three points. It would put us in a great position in the league come the close of the year.”
