A Manchester City fan tragically died during Sunday’s derby with Man United.
The club confirmed the news in a short statement on social media a day after the match, which saw Pep Guardiola’s men continue to struggle – as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Ruben Amorim’s United, meaning that they have won just one of their last 11 outings. The worst run of Guardiola’s managerial career. That came despite Josko Gvardiol giving City the lead only for late goals from Bruno Fernandes and former Rangers loanee Amad Diallo to flip the game on its head.
However the struggles on the park were put into context off the pitch as City confirmed the tragic death of a fan in a statement, saying: “Manchester City are aware of the tragic news that one of our supporters passed away following a medical incident at yesterday’s match. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
The incident was not known at the time of the game, with the match progressing as normal and no further details have been shared regarding the supporter, with tributes paid online. Luton Town posted on X: “We send our condolences to their family, friends and all at Manchester City at this time” whilst a City fan posted: “RIP. Very sad news and a timely reminder that there are more important things in life than a game of football that many are falling out over.”
The defeat leaves City fifth in the Premier League and already nine points behind current leaders Liverpool having played a game more. And boss Pep took full responsibility for the woeful run, saying: “There’s not much to say. No defence, they were incredibly persistent. We have not lost eight games in two seasons. We can’t defend that. It’s not about this or that player. We gave away goals, our fault. We don’t play with composure. The results are not good, the game was not exceptional. I know the situation, I understand.
“I’m not good enough. I am the boss, the manager, I have to find solutions and so far I haven’t. That’s the reality. We want to play better, create chances. But at the moment it’s not possible.”
