Saint-Etienne could be about to offer Cyriel Dessers an Ibrox escape route.

The Rangers forward has fallen behind Danilo and Hamza Igamane in the pecking order under Philippe Clement, with recent appearances limited to cameos from the bench. With fans not exactly enamoured with the Nigerian anyway, not taking a penalty in Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup Final shoot-out to Celtic, with goalkeeper Jack Butland stepping up before the frontman, has not gone down well on the back of a poor run of form.

Now Le Republican Sportif reports that the Ligue 1 outfit are interested in Dessers. They claim that Rangers would be looking for around £3.5 million to let the forward leave Govan in January. The 30-year-old still has two-and-a-half years left to run on his contract and Philippe Clement would likely need to bring in another striker before letting any of the current crop leave, with a Europa League campaign to juggle alongside domestic commitments.

But a loan with an option to buy could suit both parties should the Belgian bolster his attack in January. Dessers arrived for £4m during Michael Beale’s ill-feted summer rebuild in 2023.

Despite breaking the 20-goal mark last season, regularly missing chances and in big games have seen fans grow weary with the frontman, who they feel should be racking up much bigger numbers in terms of goal return. And with Igamane and Danilo now producing the goods, Dessers may find himself as third choice for the remainder of the season.
