Glasgow’s “most dangerous” areas have been named in a new report. Home to a population of more than 620,000, Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city.
It features many of the country’s top cultural attractions, including a variety of museums and galleries, as well as countless restaurants and bars. However, Glasgow struggles with crime just like any other city.
New research conducted by security firm Churchill Support Services has revealed the 10 areas of the city that have the highest crime rates. According to the experts, Glasgow’s overall crime rate is 81.2 crimes per 1,000 residents.
As we previously reported, Edinburgh was found by the experts to have a city-wide crime rate of 87.7 crimes per 1,000. Coming in at number one as the “most dangerous” area of Glasgow is Anderston, City and Yorkhill.
As the name suggests, this area comprises of the city centre as well as two other regions to the west. It is home to much of the Glasgow’s vibrant nightlife and bustling retail districts but was found to have an overall crime rate of 510.2 crimes per 1,000 people.
The experts state that crimes of dishonesty and violent assault are the most prevalent crimes in the area, with 4,121 and 2,687 offences, respectively. Drug crimes and sexual crimes were also found to be significant issues in Anderston, City and Yorkhill.
Meanwhile, the area of Glasgow with the second-highest crime rate is Govan. According to Churchill Support Services, the riverside district has an overall crime rate of 188.3 crimes per 1,000 people.
Govan’s most prevalent crimes were found to be crimes of dishonesty (1,188 offences), motor vehicle crimes (1,158 offences), and violent assault (633 offences). The experts state that there is also a “worrying trend” in drug crimes, which they say have more than doubled in recent months.
The third most dangerous area of Glasgow according to Churchill Support Services is Calton. Famous for its street markets, the east end area was found to have a crime rate of 181.8 per 1,000 residents.
Rounding out Glasgow’s top five “most dangerous” areas are Southside Central and Dennistoun. The former’s crime rate is 155.6 per 1,000 people, according to the experts, while Dennistoun, just east of the city centre, was found to have a crime rate of 126.2.
Churchill Support Services commented: “One of the UK’s largest cities, and a shining beacon for culture and commerce across Scotland, Glasgow is often what many picture when they think of a modern Scottish landscape. A booming economy, coupled with its reputation as a former European City of Culture, means Glasgow has rightfully earned its stellar reputation.
“However, undercutting all of those indisputable draws is the city’s soaring rates of crime across its multiple different wards and regions. While each of these areas has its issues, they combine to create a worrying trend for crime in Glasgow.”
