Motherwell, Wishaw and Carluke’s MP Pamela Nash visited the Motherwell Delivery Office to thank local postal workers during the busiest time of the year for their service.
Christmas is Royal Mail’s busiest period, with around double the normal volume of letters and parcels processed.
Pamela met with many of the 75 people working every day in Motherwell to get our mail delivered, seeing at close range the hard work that goes into this.
She also met with Lead Customer Operations Manager, Stewart Donaldson, and CWU rep Jim McKinstray at the Muir Street base about Royal Mail’s strategy to make sending and receiving parcels as convenient as possible over the festive period, and the challenges being faced.
Pamela said: “It was great to visit the Motherwell Delivery Office and hear first-hand postal workers’ experience of a changing business and the busy festive period.
“Increasing numbers of parcels and changing working hours are putting additional pressure on the whole team, and this is exacerbated at Christmas time.
“It’s important we all appreciate the tremendous work that they do and the service they provide, we couldn’t have Christmas without them.”
Royal Mail prepares all year to deliver at Christmas time. Across the UK, the business has recruited 16,000 temporary workers and added almost 4,000 new vans, trucks and trailers to the fleet.
The Motherwell Delivery Office has hired six new recruits and four extra vehicles for the Christmas period to meet increased demand for deliveries in the local area.
CWU rep, Jim McKinstry, said: “Our posties are under more pressure than ever before, with a growing number of parcels, and later working hours.
“It was important for Pamela to hear first-hand what impact this is having on our team.”
Stewart Donaldson, Customer Operations Manager for Motherwell, added: “It was great to have Pamela visit our delivery office and to show her how we are gearing up for our peak period.
“We are pulling out all the stops to deliver Christmas for our customers.”
