(CNN) – Walmart is the latest retailer to have some of its employees use body cameras.
The company didn’t give specifics on its security measures in a statement to USA Today, but Walmart noted it’s a move to utilize the latest in retail industry technology.
A person close to the project told the newspaper the decision is a focus on employee safety at a handful of stores.
The nation’s largest retailer says it’s a pilot program focusing on one market for now.
Stores like TJ Maxx and HomeGoods are already using body cameras in some of its locations in efforts to cut down on shoplifting.
The National Retail Federation released a new study on Tuesday. It reports a 93% increase in the average number of shoplifting incidents per year in 2023 compared to 2019.
The group also reports more than one-third of retailers surveyed said they were looking at body-worn cameras for employees.
