Drivers born in late 1954 or early 1955 have received a new message from the DVLA. Motorists who have just turned 70, or are about to, are being alerted to guidance on what to do next.
The agency has posted a message on X, formerly Twitter, targeting drivers who have just celebrated their 70th birthday, or are about to. It’s worth paying attention – the information is useful and the actions it advises are free and quick to complete.
The message reads: “Know someone who has just turned 70? Let them know they can renew their driving licence online: http://gov.uk/renewat70 It’s easy, quick and secure on http://GOV.UK.”
The link provides further details in both English and Welsh. It explains that you can renew your driving licence online with the DVLA for free if you’re 70 or over – or will be 70 in the next 90 days.
If you renew online, your licence should arrive within one week. The website states that this service can be used to renew a British driving licence for those who are 70 or over, or will be 70 in the next 90 days, reports Devon Live.
Drivers must renew every three years once they reach 70. DVLA officials also note that you can change the licence photo at the same time as renewing your licence. However, be aware – this service cannot be used to renew a C1 (medium-sized vehicles) or D1 (minibus) entitlement.
“You must do this by post,” says the DVLA. The site then outlines what you need to renew your driving licence online.
The DVLA clarifies: “DVLA will send you a confirmation email once you’ve applied. You might be asked to take part in research by email, but you can opt out.”
They also add that motorists can continue driving while their licence is being renewed (further details can be found here), provided they meet all the necessary conditions.
