GB News’ Mark Dolan, 50, has shared the unexpected news that he’s been axed from the network. The ex-Channel 4 personality divulged the update on X, formerly known as Twitter, through two enigmatic messages.
His initial tweet, posted around 5:30 pm, said: “SOME NEWS. I’ve hosted my last MARK DOLAN TONIGHT on GB News. More to follow…” An hour later, Mark elaborated: “STATEMENT. GB News have made the decision to permanently relieve me of my duties at the channel. I will speak publicly about this in due course.”
There was no immediate reason given for his sudden departure, leading fans to speculate. Some suggest turmoil within GB News after various dismissals and suspensions, while others point to Mark’s handling of Laurence Fox and an incident on his show as potential factors.
Previously, Mark drew ire on GB News during his attempt to offer a Match Of The Day substitute when Gary Lineker was sidelined from the BBC. Last March, alongside Patrick Christys, who recapped Bournemouth’s surprise 1-0 victory over Liverpool, Dolan attempted some sports broadcasting.
With questionable assistance from an electronic screen, Christys referenced Bournemouth’s moniker “Cherries,” quipping: “How on earth did Liverpool manage to stick seven past Manchester United and then lose to a team named after a fruit? “, reports the Mirror.
Later, Patrick observed that Lineker “might like Brighton because it’s full of rainbow flags and woke people.”
The remark failed to win over the audience. One viewer posted a gif with the caption: “Dies from cringe.”
Some responses included: “Jesus, this is so pathetic I could weep” and “Bit cringey this lads.”
More comments piled on: “Are you seriously pretending to be sports presenters now? ” and “The absolute state of this, screams of people who call the game ‘footie.'” Someone else addressed the channel directly: “This is absolutely atrocious. How embarrassing. There are YouTube channels with better production values and more knowledgeable insights than this.”
The controversy didn’t stop there, as some speculated that Mark was sidelined by GB News for “throwing his colleagues under the bus” following his remarks about Laurence Fox during a guest host spot for him and Dan Wooton earlier in the year.
Clarifying why he was on air, Mark stated: “Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll be aware that GB News presenter Laurence Fox appeared on the channel last night and made some offensive comments about the journalist Ava Evans.”
“I wasn’t expecting to be here tonight. Dan’s absence tonight is beyond my control. Free speech is everything, but it comes with responsibility. Anything you say, or write, or broadcast, will rightly be exposed to the court of public opinion.”
The presenter went on: “I know. I’ve been there. And I’ll be there again. Whether Laurence should stay on air is not my decision, and Dan’s absence tonight is also beyond my control. There is an investigation ongoing. But the comments made by Laurence in my view were sexist, misogynistic and have been condemned across the political spectrum from the left and the right and even the liberal democrats.”
